Between Shopee and TikTok Shop, Which Do Online Sellers Prefer?

Selling online has become commonplace, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Online sellers are also increasingly diverse, from various generations and social classes. Jakpat conducted a survey to find out the current behavior of online sellers. The report, which involved 2336 respondents, discussed multiple things related to selling online, such as the platform used, the products sold, and the obstacles experienced.

As many as 34% of respondents admitted that they sell online with half of them as sellers, which means they are directly in contact with buyers. Meanwhile, 35% are resellers where they buy goods to sell again. One out of 3 Millennials does the job as a side hustle.

Food and beverages are the most sold products by respondents with a percentage of 26%, followed by women’s clothing (22%) and fashion accessories (14%). Seven out of 10 online sellers use e-commerce as a platform to sell. However, some sell through social media (49%) and messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or LINE (23%).

Attracting buyers

Promotion is necessary to attract buyers. Discounts (61%) and free shipping (60%) are the most frequently offered promotions by online sellers. These two things are also the most used by buyers. Gen Z sellers admitted that discounts are preferred over free delivery. On the other hand, the Millennials and Gen Z said that their buyers use more promos for free shipping.

Then, the features on the platform are also utilized. As many as 58% of respondents use affiliate links to promote their products.  Gen Z online sellers are the category that uses the feature the most. Almost 70% of respondents provided affiliate links to Shopee.

In addition to affiliate links, as many as 23% of online seller respondents use the live shopping feature. Shopee Live and TikTok Live are two of the most widely used e-commerce features for live shopping. On the one hand, 1 out of 5 online sellers still rely on social media, such as Instagram Live and Facebook Live.

“The trend of live shopping is increasingly popular in Indonesia because it offers a more interactive and personalized shopping experience with consumers. This is a great opportunity for online sellers, especially MSMEs, to reach more customers and increase their sales,” said Jakpat Lead Researcher, Farida Hasna.

In terms of functionality, Shopee Live has generated the most sales. Meanwhile, TikTok Live tends to bring in more visitors.
