Data Plan Prices Are Rising? We Don’t Leave, We Just Downgrade

Imagine your regular provider suddenly raises its data plan prices. Would you switch providers right away? As it turns out, very few people choose that option.

Price Increase? Downgrade First

Half of respondents (50%) said they would stay with the same provider but move to a cheaper plan or a smaller data allowance. Around 23% would begin comparing offers from other providers, 18% would remain unconcerned because price is not a major issue for them, and 6% would add a second SIM card. Only 3% would switch providers immediately.

Are Data Plan Prices Fair or Expensive?

Most respondents hold a relatively neutral view, 44% consider the price of their current data plan to be fair. The remainder are divided, with approximately 32% consider their plans expensive, while 25% consider them cheap.
The picture differs by provider. Indosat users are more divided, with some describing prices as fair and others as cheap. Telkomsel users are more likely to consider their data plans expensive, while XL Axiata users are comparatively more likely to regard their prices as fair.

Loyal, but with Conditions

Our loyalty, it turns out, comes with conditions. If another provider offers a cheaper promotion with a larger data allowance, 49% of respondents would consider switching, while 31% said they would probably stay..

When prices rise, Telkomsel users tend to downgrade their plans, whereas XL Axiata users are comparatively more active in comparing other providers. When offered a promotion, Telkomsel users are more likely to remain undecided. XL Axiata users, meanwhile, are more evenly divided between those who would stay and those open to switching.

What Would Make Us Consider Switching?

Signal quality and speed rank highest (56%) followed by cheaper plan prices (53%) and network coverage in their area. What about recommendations from friends or family? Only 8%. It seems we rely more on our own experience with signal quality than on other people’s recommendations..

Indosat users tend to weigh plan prices more heavily, while Telkomsel and XL Axiata users tend to place signal quality higher on their list.

Viewed by Generation and Gender

Gen Z respondents are more likely to downgrade their plans when prices rise (54% compared with 46% of Gen Y). Gen Y, on the other hand, is more likely to compare providers (27% compared with 18% of Gen Z) and more frequently cites signal quality as a reason to switch (62% compared with 50%).

Women are more likely to choose downgrading (55% compared with 43% of men), while men are more likely to say they would definitely switch if they received an attractive offer (15% compared with 8%).

The Bottom Line

A price increase does not automatically lead users to switch providers. We prefer to adjust our plans, compare options quietly, and switch only when an offer is truly compelling and the network quality meets our needs.
