Gen Z vs AI Chatbots: The New Go-To for Venting?

Gen Z vs AI Chatbots: The New Go-To for Venting?

Be honest, who here has ever poured their heart out to ChatGPT or another AI chatbot about a personal problem? Turns out you’re not alone. Jakpat’s latest survey of 1,181 respondents uncovered some fascinating insights into how Indonesia’s younger generation is turning to AI to talk through their problems.

It’s Becoming a Habit, Not Just a Passing Trend

Among all respondents, 38.6% said they’ve turned to AI a few times for certain matters, while 29.4% do so frequently covering everything from work stress to relationship troubles. Only 8.6% said they have no interest in it at all.

Breaking it down by generation, Gen Z is notably more inclined to open up to AI than Gen Y. As many as 35.9% of Gen Z respondents said they frequently vent to AI, compared to just 22.4% of Gen Y. It’s clear that younger generations are more comfortable using technology for personal matters.

So What Are They Actually Talking About?

Among those who have previously confided in AI, the most common theme was, unsurprisingly, “everything” – 61.8% said they discuss all kinds of topics. But notably, career (39.6%) and finances (32%) were also commonly discussed topics.

The biggest generational gap shows up around romance. Gen Z is far more likely to talk about relationships with AI (29.2%) compared to just 16% of Gen Y. It seems AI has become a judgment-free zone for working through romantic drama.

But AI Still Can’t Replace Humans

Despite the rising usage, most people remain realistic about AI’s limits. 57% said AI is fairly helpful but human connection is still necessary. Only 27.7% felt AI is genuinely practical and helpful, while 14% see it as merely a temporary escape.

When it comes to comfort sharing feelings, the results were fairly balanced. 36.9% of respondents felt neutral (rating it a 3 out of 5), while only 16.6% said they felt significantly more comfortable with AI (a 5 out of 5). Interestingly, even though Gen Z uses AI for venting more often, they were slightly more likely to prefer humans for deeper emotional sharing, 18.5% of Gen Z rated themselves a 1 (strongly preferring humans), compared to just 11.9% of Gen Y.

So, Is AI a Confidant or Just a Backup Plan?

The data makes it clear: AI chatbots have become part of how Indonesians, especially Gen Z cope with everyday personal struggles. But that doesn’t mean they’ve fully placed their trust in AI for matters of the heart. When it comes to deeper emotional support, humans remain the top choice. What do you think, is an AI chatbot enough to replace a confidant, or do we still need a real human to talk to?
