Gen Z vs. Gen Y — Who’s More Interested in Chinese Electric Vehicles?

GIIAS 2026 has been making waves online as more Chinese electric vehicle brands make their presence known, from Leapmotor to GWM. But behind the hype, how many Indonesians are actually following this trend closely? Jakpat surveyed 1,138 respondents to find out.

It turns out only 13.5% say they’re “closely following, staying updated” on GIIAS 2026 and the influx of Chinese EVs. The majority, 51.2%, have only heard about it in passing. Another 28.5% are only hearing about it for the first time when asked, while 6.7% openly admit they have no interest at all. So despite all the buzz in the media, this topic remains at a “heard of it” level for most people.

Where Does Gen Y Stand?

This is where the generational gap becomes clearer. Gen Y still leans toward conventional vehicles, with 38.9% preferring gasoline or hybrid models.. When asked about their main consideration regarding Chinese EVs, Gen Z is most excited about features and technology, 46.9% cite this as their top reason, well above Gen Y’s 32.5%. Gen Y, on the other hand, is more cautious about build quality and resale value.

The takeaway: many Indonesians may not yet be fully “in the loop” on GIIAS 2026 and the influx of Chinese EVs, but once asked directly, they have fairly clear opinions. Gen Z is more curious about the technology, Gen Y is more careful about quality and resale value, and both agree that having more choices is good for consumers.
