5 Has TV Lost the Battle to Social Media? Be honest, when was the last time you sat down to watch a regular television programme? If your answer is “I can’t remember,” you are not alone. Jakpat recently surveyed 1,130 respondents about their television viewing habits, and the results raise real questions about the future of the small screen. One in Five People Has Fully Moved On from TV Among all respondents, only 24% still watch television every day. The rest have loosened their grip considerably, 36% say they watch TV only occasionally, 22.3% say they watch very rarely, and most notably, 17.7% have stopped watching television altogether. This means that nearly one in five people has completely moved on from TV. A habit that was once a daily routine has now become more of a fallback option, something people turn on when they have nothing else to do or don’t have their phone in hand, and even then, only if there’s time. Why Is This Happening? When asked about the current state of television, 43.7% of respondents said plainly that TV has lost out to social media. Not just lost, but lost decisively, making it the number one reason people are watching television less and less. In addition, 26.9% feel that TV content is no longer engaging, while only 25.5% still consider television interesting. Another 3.1% stated outright that TV has become outdated. Taken together, the main reason people are moving away from television isn’t simply laziness. It’s that social media has already delivered what they were looking for first: speed, personalisation, and constant, up-to-the-second updates. So, Has TV Really Lost? Not entirely, but the signs are unmistakable. Television is no longer the primary source of entertainment, and social media has been steadily, and decisively, taking over that role. If you’re someone who hasn’t picked up a TV remote in a long time, you likely represent a trend that is very much underway. What do you think? Does TV still have a chance to reclaim its popularity, or is it time to hand the stage over entirely to social media?
