30 The Eid homecoming travel, or famously known in Indonesian as “mudik”, is one of the Indonesian Moslems’ traditions during the Ramadhan. Toward the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, the country’s streets will be cramped with vehicles of those people who go home for the big feast. Therefore, recently Jakpat has conducted a survey in order to see the preferences of Indonesian Moslems regarding to the transportation mode for homecoming travel this Eid holiday. This survey involved in total 2011 respondents from across Indonesia, with a relatively balanced male-female composition and various economic backgrounds. For the further notes, Jakpat’s respondents in this survey are Indonesian Moslems smart-phone users, with a range of age from 16 to 50 year-old. The survey report is divided into two parts. For this first part, we would explain about respondents who choose to go home for Eid holiday by public transportation, which are 766 out of 2011 respondents (38%). First of all, out of those respondents who choose public transportation for their Eid homecoming travel, we would like to see which kind of public transportation that they choose. Apparently, many of them choose to go home by bus (40%), while there are also some of them who choose plane (28%) and train (26%). In addition, men are more likely than women to choose public transportation (57% VS 43%), as well as to choose bus (65% VS 35%) and train (58% VS 42%). Next, regarding to the reason why they choose public transportation for the Eid homecoming travel, there are eight reasons that are chosen by our respondents. 38% of them choose it because they think it’s more practical than using private transportation, while 34% of them choose it because they say it’s more relaxed during the travel if they go by public transportation. 31% of those respondents choose public transportation because that’s the only transportation mode that could reach their hometown, while 30% of them say that going by public transportation means cheaper by the spend for ticket. There are also 30% of them who think that it’s less tiring during the travel if they go by public transportation, while 29% of them choose it in order to avoid the traffic jam. 9% of those respondents choose public transportation over private transportation for safety reason, while the other 9% of them choose it because they have to bring a lot of luggage during the travel. When asked about the ticket, apparently only 28% of our respondents who admit that they have bought the ticket for the Eid homecoming travel. 37% of them say that they have bought it since within a month before Ramadhan starting, while 33% of them bought it last week. There are also 26% of them who have bought the ticket within three months before Ramadhan starting. On the other hand, there are 72% of our respondents who admit that they have not bought the ticket yet. More than half of them (51%) say that they plan to buy the ticket within a week before Eid, while 28% of them will buy it within two weeks before Eid. Moreover, there are 21% of them who have planned to buy the ticket within three weeks before Eid. Still in regards to the ticket, there are 36% of our respondents who admit that they buy the ticket for their Eid homecoming travel via online purchasing website. There are also 31% of them who buy it at the travel agent, while 23% buy it right at the station, airport, or harbor. Subsequently, regarding to the money they spend for ticket, apparently most of our respondents (41%) admit that they spend about IDR 100,000 to IDR 500,000. There are also 19% of them who spend less than IDR 100,000. On the other hand, there are 39% who spend more than IDR 500,000 to approximately IDR 5,000,000 for the ticket of their Eid homecoming travel. Furthermore, we found that most of our respondents (77%) will depart for their Eid homecoming travel within a week before Eid. Moreover, there are 16% of them who depart within two weeks before Eid, and also 7% of them who depart within three weeks. When asked about whom they are going home with, many of them (49%) answered that they will go home with family, while there are 27% of them who admit that they will go home alone. In addition to that, there are 13% of them who will go home with their partner, while the other 8% with their friends. Lastly, regarding to things they prepare for the Eid homecoming travel, most of our respondents (66%) say that they prepare things and equipments to bring for the journey, such as clothes, medicine, money, etc. Meanwhile, more than half of them (58%) prepare the stamina for the long journey, and the other 53% prepare some souvenirs or gifts to give for people at their home. At the very last, we give a trivia regarding to whether they will go back from the homecoming to their current domicile by the same transportation mode.
