Indonesian Citizen Expectations for Smart City – Survey Report

Previously, we already discussed smart home, and now we want to discuss smart city. Actually, what is smart city? According to Wikipedia, smart city has many definitions, thus it is rather difficult to define precisely. According to Deakin, smart city is city utilizes ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) to meet the demands of the market (the citizens of the city), and that community involvement in the process is necessary for a smart city. Here, it shows that involvement of people and city cannot be separated to build smart city.

Well, how are our respondents’ expectations towards smart Inflatable water slide for sale Canada city? Here, JAKPAT conducted a survey to our respondents in some cities: Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Makasar. This survey involved 722 respondents, from 17 to 35 years old. Here are their answers.

1. DO THEY KNOW SMART CITY?

1In those cities, we found that most respondents do not know smart city. As we can see from the infographic, those respondents knowing smart city are below 50% in every city. It shows that respondents are less aware of smart city.

2. PROBLEMS IN THEIR CITIES

2We asked what problems they have in their cities by giving an open ended question. Here we found out some problems they stated concerning their cities. Respondents in all cities say that traffic is the biggest problem they have in the cities. Other problems respondents have in Jakarta are sanitation and natural disaster like flood. In Bandung, other problems besides traffic are sanitation and transportation. Respondents in different island like Makassar also state sanitation and flood as other problems they have.

3. HOW NECESSARY ARE THESE PROBLEMS TO BE AIDED BY IT SYSTEM OR SMART SYSTEM?

We used a grid question to know respondents’ answer regarding the necessity of IT system or smart system assistance in the city. We gave some problems here, and then respondents choose the answers. For the infographics below, here is the legend:

3aIn Jakarta, security problem in the city is the most necessary problem to be aided by IT system or smart system than traffic problem or sanitation. Then, it is followed by public transport problem and traffic problem. It may be caused by the robbery case in Jakarta, so many of respondents think Jakarta lacks of security.

Bandung

3bNot only Jakarta but also Bandung have security problem in the city as the most necessary problem to be aided by IT system or smart system. Majority of respondents in Bandung think their city biggest problem is security. Other big problems in Bandung are traffic and public transport. Respondents want these problems to be aided by IT system or smart system.

Yogyakarta

3cMajority of respondents in Yogyakarta also feel that security is the biggest problem and has to be aided by IT system or smart system. Other problems besides security are health, public transportation and traffic.

Surabaya

3dSimilar to other aforementioned cities, majority of respondents in Surabaya also think that the city lacks of security. Thus, majority of respondents think it should be aided by IT system or smart system. Health problem in Surabaya is more necessary than traffic problem, according to respondents.

Makassar

makasarIn Makassar, the biggest problems are traffic and security. It is showed by the same percentage on traffic and security option. Other problems need to be aided by IT system or smart system besides traffic and security problem are health and city planning/arrangement.

4. HOW GOOD THE PERFORMANCE OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THOSE CITIES IS

4We also were curious in knowing respondents’ evaluation towards performance of the government in their cities. Thus, we asked them using a scale question, in which respondents can give value from 1 to 5 concerning the performance of the government. Most cities are evaluated as neutral by respondents.

Jakarta

In Jakarta, we did not get the majority answer related to performance evaluation of Jakarta’s government. But, most respondents think the government is neither good nor bad. As shown on the infographic, only a quarter of respondents consider the performance of Jakarta’s government is good.

Bandung

Most respondents in Bandung consider the performance of the government is good, even though fewer than half of respondents think so (43.5%). And, only around 25% of respondents think the performance of the government is neither good nor bad.

Yogyakarta

Majority of respondents in Yogyakarta evaluate the performance of the government as neutral. Fewer than quarter of respondents consider the Yogyakarta’s government is good.

Surabaya

In Surabaya, most respondents evaluate their government as a good government. But, it does not reach half of them think so, only 38.31% of respondents think the government is good. And 31.34% of respondents are neutral.

Makassar

Almost half of respondents in Makassar evaluate Makassar’s government as a neither good nor bad government (49.3%). Near quarter of respondents consider the government is bad (22.54%).

5. WHAT APPS/SYSTEMS WILL MAKE THE CITIES BETTER?

5Here, we also asked the respondents to give some suggestions regarding the apps or systems will be needed to make the cities better by using an open ended question. Respondents can write all their suggestions here. After filtering the answer, we got some major answers given by respondents mentioning some apps/systems.

Jakarta

Respondents in Jakarta, recommend apps/systems providing information concerning public transportation, waze and gojek to make Jakarta better.

Bandung

Similar to Jakarta, most respondents in Bandung think apps/systems providing information concerning transportation will make Bandung better. Other suggestions are waze and apps developed by the government.

Yogyakarta

In Yogyakarta, the need of apps/systems providing information concerning public transportation is high. Besides those apps/systems, respondents think google maps will be helpful for making Yogyakarta better.

Surabaya

Respondents in Surabaya need apps/systems providing information concerning city more than public transportation. Respondents in Surabaya do not mention a particular app that will make the city better.

Makassar

Respondents in Makassar also do not mention a particular app that will make the city better, but they think apps/systems providing information concerning public transportation and city will make the city better.
