44 With advances in technology, more and more activities have moved into the digital realm. Snail mail has been replaced with e-mails or text messages. Printed photos are now simply shared through social media platforms. CDs are slowly fading out of existence as people prefer downloadable music for their gadgets. In an attempt to cut down on costs and practice portability, many individuals and schools around the world are contemplating the transition to the digital world for using books and course materials. Even in Indonesia, some classes are using online platforms to provide course materials as soft copies instead of hard copies. This survey was taken by 504 respondents between the ages of 18 and 39, inclusive with roughly a 52:48 female-to-male ratio. READING & PURCHASING HABITS People still read books nowadays. When respondents east jump were asked how many books they have read in the past 12 months, nearly one-third said that they have read 2-3 books (31.35%). As well, nearly 1 in 5 have read 4-5 books and likewise, 11 or more books. Likewise, people still buy books nowadays. Within the last year, of those who did buy books, the most of them purchased 2-3 books (38.62%) followed by 4-5 books at 23.35%. Some people purchase e-books, but the vast majority still purchase printed books. PREFERENCE FOR PRINT OR ELECTRONIC? When asked which format they prefer, a lot more respondents said they like printed books (54.56%) over electronic books (15.08%). The rest (30.36%) prefer both equally. There are many reasons why each book format may be preferred over another. For e-book lovers, the biggest reasons cited are portability (76.32%) and storage (63.16%). Not only can e-books be easily carried around but not a lot of storage space is required to maintain them. Other reasons include: As for print books, tangibility was the most commonly cited reason (76.73%). People like to hold the physical item in their hand. The second most common reason is the desire to build a personal collection of books (46.55%). Other reasons include: Of those who do prefer both formats, it is interesting to note that more than half of them have about the same amount of print and e-books (54.25%). But a huge chunk also claim to have more printed books at the moment (35.95%), perhaps while they are building up their e-library collection. One reason cited for purchasing e-books was the cheaper cost. If printed books and e-books were the same price, e-book lovers would still buy the electronic version (76.32%). Those who love print books will still overwhelmingly choose print format (97.82%). Those who prefer both would also choose the printed version (73.86%). This leads to the conclusion that perhaps people still have a large preference for printed books, and those will be here to stay for longer.
